God's Good News for The Never-Churched Child

Whitney T. KuniholmHow can we communicate the Good News and God’s Word to the "never-churched child"? That’s one of the most important issues facing the church today and one that I literally ran into a few years ago.

I was in the middle of my Saturday morning jog when I heard someone shouting, "I’ve had it with you guys!" I looked up and saw a man with two young boys, maybe 10 or 11 years old, pinned against the brick wall of the junior high school. His face was red and angry and he had his finger two inches from their faces. He was holding what appeared to be their duffle bag in the air.

"I don’t want to see you here again. Do you hear me?" he continued. Probably the boys had disobeyed some rule. But it looked like they were in physical danger so I ran over and stood close enough so that the man could see me. He looked up and then backed off. Finally he threw the duffle bag down in front of the boys shouting, "I’m through with you!" then stomped back into the school. Was he their father, their coach, a neighbor? The boys picked up the duffle bag and wandered off.

Jogging and Thinking

As I jogged on I kept thinking, "Those boys will remember that for the rest of their lives." When I reached the track behind the school I prayed for the boys that God would heal whatever damage the angry man had done in their lives and emotions. But I knew without a doubt that it was anything but God’s love that those boys had experienced. And who knows how they would choose to deal with their anger in the future.

At Scripture Union, our vision is "that children, young people and their families will know God’s love, follow Jesus and meet God daily in his Word." The progression is important. Although God can reach children any way he chooses, it is critical that they experience his love so they can be open to his deeper work and purpose in their lives. Sadly, for too many kids today, life is an "in your face experience." They see anything but models of God’s love from the adults around them.

The First Step

How can we communicate the Good News and God’s Word to the never-churched children in your world? The first step is to let them know that we value and love them. Then they will be much more likely to follow Jesus and meet God daily in his Word. Remember what Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these" (Matt. 19.14).

The next step is to take practical steps to reach out to them where ever they are. Scripture Union has two programs to help you and your church do just that—SuperKids®, the anywhere, anytime children’s outreach program, and PrimeTime®, the faith-based after school program for kids—and we’d love to help you get started.

Ask God to open the eyes of your heart to the never-churched children all around you and to the ways he wants to use you to reach them. Because when you do, you’ll quickly find yourself in the middle of the most strategic mission field in our world today.
